Gadolinium -  Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF)

Recently the use of gadolinium dye has been in the news. Gadolinium and NSF have been under much scrutiny due to the dangers of gadolinium causing NSF, a rare fibrosing disorder that affects skin, muscles, joints and tissue. Gadolinium is an FDA-approved contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Gadolinium-based contrast agents are commonly used to improve the visibility of internal structures when patients undergo an MRI. Gadolinium side effects have been known only a short time since a report published by Shawn Cowper. MD. Dr. Cowper's Gadolinium NSF research indicates that approximately 3%+ of all MRI patients with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), renal failure or renal insufficiency who later receive a MRI with gadolinium, will develop NSF- Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis 

MRI Warnings about NSF & End Stage Renal Diease (ESRD)

After the gadolinium NSF warning issued by the FDA in 2007, all manufacturers of Gadolinium issued NSF warnings as what is known as black box warnings about the increased risks of NSF when gadolinium is used by those with acute or chronic renal insufficiency. Many MRI patients with early stage renal insufficiency may not know of their condition prior to the MRI with contrast thereby greatly increasing the risks of contracting  NSF.

Gadolinium MRI Side Effects

As stated above the worst side effect or complication of gadolinium is development of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD). NSF and NFD are progressive diseases that has no known cure and no consistently effective treatment. It is painful, extremely debilitating, and sometimes deadly. According to recent studies, these serious gadolinium symptoms that may later be diagnosed as NSF or NFD, can develop within several days of using gadolinium exposure, but can take up to 18 months for the NSF symptoms or NFD symptoms to appear. These gadolinium side effects may include: skin tightening, muscle contractures, dark botches of skin, reddened areas of skin, thickened areas of skin or lesion like disorders, hip pain, bone pain, rib cage pain, severe joint problems, kidney failure, or renal failure, muscle pain, yellow spots on eyes and other serious gadolinium side effects.
