Punch Skin Biopsy Testing for NSF & NFD
Many patients that have had MRIs and MRAs with a gadolinium based contrast dye have suffered serious side effects including skin disorders, muscle pains, ache like or pimple like blisters and lesions, joint pain, rib and hip bone pain and /or yellow spots on or near eyes. In order to properly test a patient, a dermatologist will usually perform a punch biopsy in or near the affected skin area to sample and study a slide under a microscope. NSF Testing Protocal
Punch Biopsy Testing for Patients with MRI Side Effects
What is a punch biopsy (BY-op-see). A punch biopsy is the removal of a small disk-shaped sample of tissue using a sharp, hollow device. The tissue is then examined under a microscope. It is also commonly called a shave biopsy or just a skin biopsy. In testing for NSF or NFD a small piece of skin is removed using a punch biopsy tool. It is often the size of a fountain pin and with the assistance of a spring type trigger, it pops or punches a small section of skin to be tested. The skin sample is then put under a microscope to diagnose or rule out an illness. There are several methods for performing punch biopsies.

Most procedures can be easily completed in outpatient medical offices. The type of punch biopsy is determined by the location, size, and type of skin or lesion to be biopsied. Punch biopsies usually include local injection or topical application of an anesthetic. The least invasive technique, the shave biopsy, involves the removal of superficial levels of skin. This type of biopsy does not require the use of sutures (stitches). Punch biopsies are most often used for deeper skin lesions. A small cylinder of skin (usually the size of a pencil eraser) is removed with a sharp, hollow instrument. If a large punch biopsy sample is taken, then the area of the biopsy site may be closed with stitches. Physicians with patients with NSF may want to contact the NSF Regsitry.
