Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (also known as nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy) is extremely rare. Recently the use of gadolinium dye has been in the news. Gadolinium and NSF have been under much scrutiny due to the dangers of gadolinium causing NSF, a rare fibrosing disorder that affects skin, muscles, joints and tissue. Gadolinium is an FDA-approved contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Gadolinium-based contrast agents are commonly used to improve the visibility of internal structures when patients undergo an MRI.

People that have developed Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis generally exhibit the following symptoms:

• Red Patches of Skin
• Areas of Skin with a burning pain
• Skin Itching & Scaly
• Skin Swelling
• Muscle Tightness
• Joint Pain and Tenderness
• Hardening and tightening of the skin
• Red or dark patches on the skin
• Yellow spots on the whites of the eyes
• Stiffness in joints and trouble moving or straightening the arms, hands, legs, or feet

Dr. Cowper's Gadolinium NSF research indicates that approximately 3%+ of all MRI patients with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), renal failure or renal insufficiency who later receive a MRI with gadolinium, will develop NSF-Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis
