MRI Side Effects Include Areas of Patches of Thickened Skin

Large patches of thick skin is a serious MRI side effect that may be associated with gadolinium exposure from a MRI. Many MRI patients suffer from MRI side effects that include thick areas of red skin, large blotches hardened or thicker areas of skin. Some of these areas of tough thick areas of skin can have some with hard lesions, acne looking blisters and lesions and whelps. The thick skin areas can get tough and rough feeling and leathery in appearance. Often the thickened skin can have a reddish color with the texture on an orange peel or leathery like a football.

These areas of thick red skin can appear soon after a  MRI may in fact be a fibrosis of the skin, muscle and surrounding tissue. These areas of thicker skin can appear on the arms, legs, trunk, feet and hands. Rarely does the red or thick skin appear on the face. These thick areas of skin are indicative or a early sign of serious Gadolinium MRI side effects, known as Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) a disorder characterized by widespread tissue fibrosis. Punch biopsy testing is needed to confirm a NSF or NFD diagnosis.

MRI & MRA Side Effects From Gadolinium

Gadolinium is used as contrast agent in MRIs and approved by the FDA. Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) is a type of MRI that is used to provide pictures of blood vessels inside the body.  Often gadolinium based MRI contrast agents are used to enhance these images. The use of gadolinium based MRI contrast agents for MRAs is an off-label use that has never been approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). However, the use of gadolinium based MRI contrast agents in MRAs is a actually can put kidney patients at an even greater risk of developing Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis/ Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NSF/NFD) because these procedures use far more gadolinium than a typical MRI.

For gadolinium based MRI contrast agents to be effective in an MRA, they must be administered at three times the approved dose. If a person's kidneys are not functioning properly, it is extremely unlikely that so much gadolinium will be eliminated from the body.  This makes it far more likely that a patient with pre-existing kidney disease will develop NSF/NSD if exposed to gadolinium based MRI contrast agents. In fact, some of the first reports of NSF/NSD actually occurred in patients who were exposed to gadolinium based MRI contrast agents during MRAs.
